The title of my original article, ‘Seven Days Walking in Florence’, is morphing into one that goes something like this: ‘Seven Days of Solitude: Walking, Praying, Writing and Eating in Florence’. The focus has shifted from walking tours to solitary travel. How does one create a meaningful life for a week away from home? As embedded in the title, my main themes of solitary travel include walking, praying, writing and eating. You might have others—cooking, biking, running, gardening, poetry, literature, music, learning the language, history, people watching. You could follow you bliss alone or with a companion, on a trip or even at home.
While visiting St. Croce yesterday I touched upon several of my walkingsubjects 1) The five mendicant churches encircling the Duomo and defining medieval and renaissance Florence that were built between the mid-thirteenth and mid-fifteen centuries; 2) Cloisters; 3) The Last Supper (Il Cenacolo) paintings in Florence. Other walking subjects include 4) the Duomo; 5) Gardens; 6) “Fiesole; 7) Morning and evening wanderings.
