“Every day is Mother’s Day!” That’s what our dad told us as the day loomed on the commercial calendar. Mom’s birthday was May 8th, so we were already celebrating her. My husband’s family also low-keyed MD so as a family we were never into the holiday. My grown children usually call or send an email about it, but as a holiday, MD doesn’t hold too much special energy for me.
This year people have asked me, “Is this Mother’s Day going to be hard for you?” --the implication being that this is my first MD ever without my mom. My first response is, “No, no more than on any other day.” But then I continue: “Yes, I miss that she is not present in the world, but I feel her presence all the time.”
My mom loved being a mother, but she also knew that motherhood was not the only role for women. She knew that love was the ultimate goal, loving all our neighbors, whoever they might be.
