I don’t always want silence. I certainly didn’t this afternoon at the Messiah Sing at church. How can one listen to the “The Trumpet Shall Sound” or “Halleluja” in silence? Well, maybe Beethoven. He was deaf when he wrote the Ninth Symphony and even conducted its premiere. But that’s not to assume that being deaf was his first choice. and for those of us who don’t compose music, we want two ears that hear.
My mother doesn’t want silence either, but at age 100 she is almost deaf. Her hearing aides don’t help anymore so she has given up fussing with them. But this afternoon she went to “Lessons and Carols” at her church. She follows the program and I bet she can think the tunes. I love to think of my mom and Beethoven making music in silence.
