In “The Artist’s Way”, Julia Cameron suggests that artists (that’s all of us because we all create) take a weekly “field trip”. Get out of our usual habitat and explore some place that might just tweak our imagination and get our creative juices stirring. So on my way up here yesterday I stopped at Barnes & Noble and perused a few “tweaking books” while enjoying a bagel (with butter, of course) and a latte.
But guess what? I didn’t find anything even worth paging through. My thoughts went something like this. “Right now there isn’t much that I can learn from books about silence, solitude and simplicity. I just want to experience it. It’s not in any book, but I can create it at my cottage by the sea.”
I finished my bagel, drove to the cottage, and spent the rest of the day sitting on the deck just being-- as well as knitting, working on a jigsaw puzzle, reading a novel and walking the beach. Cameron doesn’t tell us what we might find on our field trips. I guess I found out that I don’t have to do anything. Um, I wonder where next week’s field trip will take me and what I’ll find there?
