This story takes place in Winchester England in 1933, after The Great War and before WWII. Even if you are not interested in handwork (in this case needlepoint) or music (in this case bell ringing), I trust you will still be drawn into this story of 36 year old Violet’s life as she begins to craft a life of her own. This is a heartfelt story that I highly recommend to women; it’s awoman’s story. I probably won’t recommend it to men, but it very likely end up on my Top 12 for 2019.

Compassion for each characters in this book. I love the way Chavalier weaves together the lives of those in her narrative set in London at the time of the death of Queen Victoria. None were perfect, all were flawed, but doing their best to keep going. I wanted to keep reading. The book continues to stay with me. As I begin to create a list of my top ten reads of 2017, I believe this one is going to make it. If not, definitely an honorable mention. What a nuanced story of an unlikely friendship; two women of different ages, backgrounds, education, and class meeting on the beach in Lyme, England in the 1820s, linked together by their love of ‘curries’ (fossils). Compassion was easy to come by for every female character in the story, and even for a few of the men. |
