Second in The Deptford Trilogy, “Firth Business” being the first. Both were intense, so I’m taking a break before searching out the third, “World of Wonders.” These are on the top of my list of recommendations for the year; be sure to read them in order.

Compassion isn’t a word I’d attach to reading this book. Rather I feel joy at the relationship Peter and his mom always had and which took on a new dimension as she aged from a stroke and taught him to cook. I’m not into cooking in a big way, but I love memoirs that describe loving relationship between mothers. Daughters are usually the ones to write about their moms, so it was special to hear from a son. Compassion for all the old folk—those say 60+--who are too sacred to accept who they are, which includes but is not limited to, how they look. Compassion for those who overdo hair coloring, chin tucks, plastic surgery, that kind of thing. Compassion for young women today as they work hard to be acknowledged for their professional work, not for how physically attractive they are. Nevins tell hilarious stories to express compassion. “I would grow to champion stories about those less fortunate,” which she accomplished as president of HBO Documentary Films. Nevins may be in the category of old, but she sure has a marvelous understanding of and sense of humor about who she is. |
