Our 50th wedding anniversary celebration happened today with white water rafting down the Kennebec River. Awesome. I should have been scared but I wasn’t. I trusted our guide, Aaron—strong, young, smart, intuitive and piles of fun. If you’ve never done it before, it’s not too early to begin--even you solitudes. Even if you find yourself in a Class 4 Rapid.

I’m sitting in the back seat, way back, on the way to Maine. Everyone wants to be certain that I am okay back here all by myself. Are they serious? In the midst of a non solitary vacation, I am delighted with a little private space. Oh, I’m in the conversation but there is something comforting about this little isolation spot among various backpacks, pillows, and snacks. Next stop, L.L. Bean. Have you ever walked L.L. Bean with twelve people? We did quite well, ending up at Ben and Jerry’s. I’m amazed at all the clothes for sale, all luscious colors and spacious sizes. Enough to clothe the world, or at least the local homeless. And what about camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, home decorating and more? Next stop, Colby College. Beautiful, quiet campus where both our kids went. They hadn’t been back since graduation over twenty years ago. They loved every minute of remember what was old and being surprised at what was new. Next stop, North Country Rivers. We’re here! Tomorrow it’s on the Kennebec River. It has not been silent around here, but that’s not the point of July 4th. The road race has been run (by some, not me), the parade marched, the picnic enjoyed. It was a fabulous 4th, just as it should be, hot and sunny. Now we are heading for the Kennebec River in Maine for a one-day white water rafting adventure with our kids and grandkids. All in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary, which is in December, but not a good time to be out on the river. I may not be posting for a couple of days. Even the daily quote may be silent.
Friendly Robin on Iona.
My husband and I have this rather new habit, initiated by me of course, of naming something that we are grateful for. We do right when we wake up, so often, as the fresh brewed aroma floats up the stairs, coffee is mentioned. I’m sure we’re not alone in this gratitude, although some of you may be tea drinkers. Regardless, you get the idea. Another popular gratitude is birds, which have been in magnificent harmony these early spring mornings. If we’re early enough they are singing in chorus, offering a calming beginning to the day. Then they stop; it is silent and we figure it’s time to pour the coffee. Maybe some of you ornithologists know which birds are singing. Is it a ecumenical choir, with all the local song birds participating? Or are birds exclusive about their singing partners? Regardless, listening is a beautiful way to start the day. It’s the sound of silence. |
